Pureed vegetables seep out of your mouth, dribble down your chin. The muslin tucked into your t-shirt is soaked with drool. My darling boy. Your hand swipes for the plastic spoon but your movements aren’t quite coordinated enough.
‘Let Mummy do it.’ I chide, kissing the tip of your nose.
The love I feel for you swells but it isn’t enough. Was never enough. Why did you feel such a desperate need to follow the crowd? To party so hard?
‘Chill out. Everyone takes stuff,’ you’d say but now you’re nineteen years old and back to wearing nappies.
My heart breaks for you, and for me.
What an amazing few days! The Sister was published on Thursday. I had a fabulous publication day, and then a launch party at the weekend. I’m thrilled my book shot into the Top 5 in the UK, US and Canada, in the Amazon charts. BIG thanks to everyone who has supported me ❤️
The Sheep Effect was written for Friday Fictioneers. A 100 word story inspired by a photo prompt. Hop over to host Rochelle’s blog and check out the other entries here.

Wonderful sting in the tail
Thanks Neil!
So sad. I see young people where I work experimenting and coming to work obviously “on something” (I work in manufacturing). I want to slap them and shout “This is your life. There are no do-overs!”
It’s awful isn’t it and so prevalent. Not sure if I notice it more because I’m a parent of if it has got worse.
For me, it’s m y age and my perspective. So sad because if I were to try and confront them and shake them they would simply look at me bleary eyed and say (or think) “What do you know? You are old”. But it is precisely because of my age that I do know!
You’re right there!
Ah, the stupidity of youth…Many times a price is to high…Very powerful story, beautiful in its own way. Congrats on your successful launch!
Thanks Lore!
Oh my, that’s a powerful message that crept up unannounced. Thanks.
Thanks Graham.
This could be a story to read in school, a story on the negative effects of peer pressure and drugs. Well written
Thanks Michael. Don’t suppose the kids would take any notice though…
Well, to be fair, we didn’t, did we?
Nope!
Oh so much can go wrong… So many follow the crowd, and end up as this, in prison or worse.
It’s very sad Bjorn.
A lot of man’s inhumanity to man is made worse by the tendency to follow the crowd.
Dear Louise,
A sad and sobering story, expertly spun.
Congratulations on your debut novel. I raise my champagne glass to you in salute.
Yours,
Doug
Thanks Doug. I’ll drink to that!
This packed a mighty punch. Well written.
Thanks Thom.
Great piece, expertly crafted.
Strong message, but sadly unlikely to be heard.
Thanks. We can but try.
Sometimes I wonder how so many of us can survive their youth. A painful and powerful message. And congrats for the book launch and everything. 😀
Thanks on all counts 😃
Excellent piece. Very well done.
Thanks Sandra.
A mother’s pain at her inability to prevent her son’s pain!
A sad story repeated all over the world – the universal price of thoughtful parenthood and thoughtless youth!
As a parent it chills me. Thanks for reading.
Ditto!
My 17-year-old son has severe autism. The surprise at the end of this reminded me a little bit of him. He’s helpless in a lot of ways but I love him.
That’s so touching.
Chilling tale with an important lesson. Of course, that will “never happen to me”…
If only we were as invincible as we once thought.
Gotta be honest and say I was thinking an older person who was ill from the first few words. Once you’ve been on FF long enough you can smell a twist from two paragraphs away…lol. That said I still enjoyed reading your words as they were expertly written. Great news on your book. I’m very jealous!
Ah don’t be jealous. If it can happen for me it can happen for anyone 😃
Heartbreaking and in so few words too, Louise. You’ve portrayed the mother’s feelings so well – that aching love that’s so wonderful and so painful. Brilliant news about your launch – well done you 🙂
Thanks Lynn on both counts 😃
Pleasure 🙂
Excellent. Moving.
Thanks for reading.
Oh! Well done. Mom has a long road in front of her. Congrats on your book launch. You must be walking on air!!!!
I am Alicia – thanks!
As you should be!
What a clever, unexpected take on the prompt!
Nan
Thanks Nan!
Brilliant as always, Louise! Heart-breaking and so well portrayed. Congrats on the success of your novel. I am well into it already 🙂
Thanks Clare – and thanks so much for coming to the launch. Your support was really appreciated x
Wow, you certainly go for the cheery subjects. Sad tale, brilliantly told.
Hehe – that’s what my mum always says!
I wasn’t inspired to write about sheep this week but I was inspired to tell you that “The Sisters” was first on my list of books that Amazon. USA thinks that I would enjoy reading. Well done you. Congratulations on a successful launch.
Tracey
Thanks Tracey – it feels so bizarre that it’s out there!
Sadly, the cliff was too steep. No climbing back from that fall.
Sadly not. Thanks for reading.
Very sad and so powerful! The youth choose deaf ears in so many situations…after all it won’t happen to them! …..so they think. 😨
They do seem to think they are invincible. Thanks for reading.
Oh such a heart breaking story…
Thanks for reading.
Heartbreaking, Louise, absolutely heartbreaking. A good cautionary tale, one would hope. Magnificent writing!
Thanks so much.
What a heartbreaking moment for any parent. I think your mind would travel back to happier, gentler times when they were babes. So heavy. Well told story. Congrats on your success, Louise! So happy for you. x
Thanks so much Amy. It’s all very exciting x
Dear Louise,
This one breaks my heart. Realistic and hard hitting. Well done. And…congratulations on the book. 😀
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks very much Rochelle.
Great story about an issue not much talked about.
Thank you.
This was a heart breaking read. A sad but creative response to the prompt!
Thank you Sohini.
Sad story, Louise. A guy in college almost sped right through a barricade on an unfinished highway. I reached over and pulled the steering wheel so we went onto the off ramp. I’ve often wondered what happened to him as that was our first and last date. We didn’t see so much of that then in the city where I went to college. Good writing. Congratulations on the success of your book. 🙂 — Suzanne
Goodness that could have ended very differently for you Suzanne. How frightening!
A well-written warning. And congrats on the success of The Sister – and i have no oubtg there will be much more success to come!
I do hope so! Thanks so much.
