The heat was oppressive. Too hot to dig but I needed to move my stash. My body felt leaden as I retraced seven steps to the right of the tree and three forwards. I glanced around. No-one was watching. I dug.
The hole was empty. My head felt muggy. I shook it as if I could dislodge the confusion. Where had it gone?
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and remembered. It was seven steps left. I found the spot. My heart thudded as I dug. The bone was still there. I wagged my tail and drooled.

Hah! Nice one! Hope he enjoys his ‘stash’.
I think he has earned it!
Hahaha! It’s a dog’s life, all right. Nicely done, Louise!
Thanks. It certainly is!
Lol. This reeled me in. Good one.
As a totally personal crit I’d leave out “I glanced furtively around”. Feels like a bit of a cliche and in truth you don’t really need it – a case of less is more for me π
Thanks Paul. I was quite indecisive about furtively. It got deleted and put back in.
Much better without. Yucky cliche π
Agreed π
Ha,,, wonderful surprise at the end..
Thanks π
Doggone it, you played us just right. I hope dogs can’t think quite that concretely, though, or we’re all in trouble.

No, my dog is pretty stupid. My cat on the other hand …..
Yes, I know about cats. Mine urge me to read your output – even if it is about a dog. π
Wonderful hitch at the end.
Thanks.
LOL, did he find it “Unda da big W?” I couldn’t help but think of that old movie when I read this. What a clever doggy to be able to count! Well hooked, Louise π
I often wonder what our dog is thinking. Thanks Lyn.
Cute!
Thanks.
Nice ending, it made me smile π Not a “mobster” story then!
You never know. He may keep his machine gun in his kennel π
Dear Louise,
I’m drooling and wagging my tail. Very clever. You held me on your leash from beginning to end. Few can pull off such a story and you’ve done it well. Applause.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks Rochelle.
Dear Fab,
Woof! Woof!
This was a fantastic treat written from a great POV. I echo all the other fine comments as I say again…Woof!
Aloha,
Doug
Thanks Doug. I’ll have a dog treat π
Fun fun fun. Must try harder to remember stash locations. Don’t want to end up begging.
I suggest a GPS π
That’s a good one. Last line is a killer.
DJ
Thanks DJ
Oh no! I hope he finds his bone again. That must be traumatic for a dog. Really funny. You had me. I always equate stolen with missing children.
It doesn’t take much to confuse a dog :-). Thanks.
OMG…I LOVED that last line!
Thanks Dawn π
That was such fun to read. I love it. And of course dogs can count, and think and plan. Who could ever doubt that? Especially concerning food.
I think so Margaret. Thanks.
Wonderful! Given our FF tribe, I was expecting something gruesome… thanks for surprising me. π
It’ s nice to be lighthearted once in a while.
Cleverly done. π
Thanks Sarah Ann
What a cute story! You really got me with that ending. I expected the worst, but you gave me a laugh. Well done!
Thanks. It could have gone either way!
Louise, That was really cute. I could just see the expression on the dog’s face once I found out it was a dog. Great twist and well written.
Thanks Suzanne. Much appreciated.
Oh! I loved this. My dogs never did that.
Maybe they just didn’t tell you π
Hmmmm, never thought of that. π
